GSM (grams per square metre) indicates weight, not quality. A 700 GSM towel made from low-grade cotton will underperform a 550 GSM towel made from long-staple Egyptian cotton. The sweet spot for most daily bath use is 600–700 GSM — plush enough to feel substantial, dense enough to absorb well, and light enough to dry in reasonable time.

Construction Determines Feel

Terry loop construction is the standard. Zero-twist yarn, where fibres are held together by wrapping rather than tight spinning, creates a distinctively soft, cloud-like texture with high absorbency. Waffle-weave towels are lighter and dry faster — better suited as a secondary towel or for warmer climates. Longevity Is the Real Value Metric
